I thought it would be easy to make one of these wheels in a few hours. Boy, was I wrong. It is a very complex thing that requires precision cuts, holes and is difficult to assemble.

This my first attemps at making this kind of project. They are made with the band saw from a block of wood and feature a small drawer

From time to time I get different ideas of how to come up with a vase that looks unusual.

The first and last are made of yellow hart, bloodwood and spalted apple.

The second one is zebra wood, with beautiful graining.

The third one is made of curly maple, purple hart, blood wood and walnut. The flowers are Bloodwood, Osage and Walnut. The vase is 7" high

I found a remarkable small log that I believe is spalted Apple. It is about 7" in diameter and has a near perfect natural star inside, with lines radiating away from it. I mad a free form out of the end of it and it is pictured. I also have 7 slices, about I' thick, like the one shown, that I plan to use later on.

I had some left over 12" long angles of King wood and yellow hart. I cut them up and made these flowers. each flower has 25 segments. The vase is spalted Apple. Yes, it took quite a while, but I enjoyed it.

The flowers in the second one are made of Yellowhart and Bloodwood. The vase is spalted Apple.

I used some spalted Apple and some Osage scraps to create some small vases. I hate to toss away beautiful wood. They are about 7" high, the smaller is for dry flowers and the other contains a tall shot glass for wet flowers or "other" things.

Many kids walk by my house and they love some of the tree faces I have made. I came up with an idea for a Gnome home in our tree. I also added something that gets a laugh when they open the door. I carved the Gnomes with a rotary tool and sander. It was fun.

I found some interesting Walnut and Cherry burls. A burl is when the tree suffers stress, due to disease or natural causes and the growth lines become very unusual. I cut them with the band saw to what I saw in the wood, along the burl lines. The 2 dark ones are Walnut and about 27 inches high. from the boards that  The smaller one is Cherry and about 21" long.

What can I say other than my grandson played with this for 3 hours STRAIGHT when he first got this. This 5FT marble machine was made for pure delight. The fun starts at top where the marbles are placed in two openings. the openings allow for precise marble placement that times the whole marble's travel. It then whirls down a spiral to a xylophone, to a 6 tiered spiral, through a winding maze, down two slopes and rings a bell. Then I built a holding tray and two side storage boxes. LOADS OF FUN for everyone.

Made from plans available on the web

I used special glueing techniques to create these small projects on my mini lathe. I used scrap wood from other bigger projects. That wood is just too beautiful to waste.
